CONTRACT: 6 South
OPENING LEAD: A (denying the king)
Two possible losers: one heart and one club.
Line of play: discard the losing clubs on dummy's good hearts.
Trick 1 W: A, 2, 3, 5
Trick 2 W: 4, J, 7, 6
Declarer can now see twelve winners. He pulls trumps, returns to dummy with the spade ace and discards his losing clubs on dummy's good hearts.
Remark: a passive spade lead, forcing the ace in dummy, would have made the play much more difficult for declarer. Against best defense, the contract will be set one trick, declarer lacking a crucial entry to dummy to run his heart winners.
Declarer makes his contract.
The defense takes his heart ace.
