LESSON 16.1: GENERAL RULES OF BALANCING

Click an arrow to move forward or backward or select an item in the left menu

a) Balancing consists in reopening with a bid or a double when the opposing bidding has stopped at a low level (balancing prevents an opponent from becoming declarer in a low-level contract)

b) When the opponents have shown an eight-card or more fit, your partnership will usually also hold an eight-card or more fit (and inversely)

c) When the opponents deliberately stop bidding at the two level, their partnership is usually holding 18-21 HCP which means your partnership is holding as many highcard points

d) When balancing, give precedence to an unbid major suit

e) It is not recommended to reopen the auction in the following situations:

    - when the last bid is one of a minor
    - when the opponents did not agree a suit as trump
    - when an opponent has declared in notrump
