LESSON 20.1: GEBERAL RULES OF PENALTY DOUBLES

a) Penalty doubles must rely on total quick tricks held in both hands of the partnership

b) Penalty doubles must consider total highcard points held in both hands of the partnership

c) The player who makes a penalty double should be short in partner's opening suit (less than two cards)

d) The player who makes a penalty double guarantees at least 1 quick tricks

e) The player who makes a penalty double shows good trumps in the opponent's suit, especially in low-level contracts

f) The double of a game contract (3NT, four of a major or five of a minor) is always for penalty except over a preemptive opening

g) The double of a notrump opening is always for penalty
