SUMMARY 2. BIDDING OR AUCTION

a) Definition of a fit (agreeing a suit As trumps)

A combined total of eight or more cards in a suit between the two hands of a partnership

b) Purpose of the auction

 1. Finding, in order of priority:

       - an eight-card fit in one of the major suits
       - two balanced hands to play in notrump
       - an eight to nine-card fit in one of the minor suits

 2. Reaching the optimal level for a contract:

       - a partial contract under game at the lowest possible level or
       - a game contract ( in a major, in notrump or in a minor suit)
       - a small slam or a grand slam in the safest suit

c) Captain

 - During the auction, the captain of a parnership is the player who has not yet limited the strength of his hand

 - Each player may in turn be captain depending on the development of the auction

 - The captain decides on the final contract

d) Requirements for high-level contracts
